CCI Industrial Constructors Helps Install State-Of-The-Art Geothermal Energy System For The DTMB Public Health & Environmental Science Lab

Innovative Energy Solutions That Reduces Environmental Impact And Optimizes Resiliency
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB) Public Health & Environmental Science Lab sits on a 116-acre site located in Dimondale, Michigan. The new lab will support lab space for the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy, and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The 300,000 square foot facility will expand upon and enable testing and other laboratory functions in a safe, secure environment designed to promote efficiency, collaboration and innovation.
In an effort to reduce the environmental impact, a geothermal system integrated with underground ice-storage was designed. By utilizing the natural stability of the earth, the new lab can store and reuse thermal energy in smarter ways. Resulting in a high-performance energy solution that reduces environmental impact and optimizes the building’s resiliency.

Laying The Groundwork For A Successful Foundation
CCI’s involvement developed early on in the project, supporting mass excavation for the ice-storage system. The scope of work included excavating a roughly 6,500 sq/ft. x 10’-0 deep pit for the ice tanks, installation of socked drain tile pipe, installation of header piping and tie-in to the existing site drainage and installation of geo-fabric. The site restoration included backfilling with pea stone and class II, offering a clean & functional site, protection of the tanks and long-term maintenance efficiency.

Supporting MEP Trades With Critical Utility Excavation
In addition to the mass excavation, CCI’s civil team performed utility excavation and backfill for the selected electrical and mechanical contractors. The mechanical scope of work included excavation and backfill of 300 LF for deep underground ice-cold water piping and 250 LF for electrical service power and communication wiring. With company-owned equipment and industry leaders, we offered our clients a responsive solution to meet critical milestones and adapt to unforeseen changes. Our crews swiftly responded to all the site adjustments by managing staffing and equipment resources, allowing our partners to effectively perform their tasks and maintain schedule deliverables.
At CCI Industrial Constructors, we’re proud to be a part of this first-of-its-kind energy solution and support our clients with high-performing teams. Our work on the DTMB Lab demonstrates our ability to deliver critical scopes and build long-term partnerships.
